Tried to get a part-time job as a telemarketer yesterday. They wouldn't let me... Hmmm, I must not be evil enough. :D

Weekend getaway

Ah, long Easter weekend, spent on an island with a bunch of friends - I can take on the world again! :)
Texel: chilly but sunny, good island. Friends: fun time. Food and drinks: plenty. End result: very good.
Now, lessee what I've got left on my to-do list. ... Uh-oh. :D

Fri, Apr. 2nd, 2004, 09:21 pm

Strange. Quite peaceful at the moment, but I shouldn't be. The year on the board of my student's association is nearly over, but my studies are lagging badly. And both still claim me. My mind's tricking me, and I don't mind.

Unreal Tournament time, methinks. :D

Paintball-mayhem

Went paintballing yesterday eve. Old abandoned factory, couple of car wrecks and very little light inside for atmosphere and game on!
First time I ever did this, and it was fun. Point is, snipers suck if you want to go charging around gung-ho-style. :/ And them balls hurt! Friggin' ouch on the fingers, man!
It was good, but I think I'll stick to lasergaming - faster, you stay in the game much better after a hit and you can pop whoever popped you as you can see who got you! Try figuring out who's behind one of those masks... :P

My inner child is ten years old today

My inner child is ten years old!

The adult world is pretty irrelevant to me. Whether
I'm off on my bicycle (or pony) exploring, lost
in a good book, or giggling with my best
friend, I live in a world apart, one full of
adventure and wonder and other stuff adults
don't understand.

How Old is Your Inner Child?

I knew it!

Some weekends take long to wear off. We went to our sister association who had their yearly "we're a year older and still around" party. 3 hours travel, 2 hours walkies, 2 hours running around on a farm, 2 hours walkies, 1 hour food, some 8 hours party, 6 hours sleep, 1 hour walkies, 1 hour breakfast, 2 hours museum, and 6 hours party with the added meal of 1 whole roasted pig (including the obligatory apple in its mouth). Then 3 hours travel back to my own horribly far away bed.
...
It was fun. :)

Happy New Year!!!

Hah, holidays. You always imagine you're going to be doing so much in the holidays. There's this and that, and oh yes, I can do this as well. Right.
You don't get things done in the holidays. It's halfway now, and I still haven't done even a tenth of what I set out to do. Bleh. Too much fun things distracting you, and too much a tendency to finally take it easier. *sigh* Let's see what I can do THIS week then. :P

Wed, Dec. 3rd, 2003, 01:21 am

*sigh* Man, life is wearying sometimes. I think tomorrow will be an absolute nightmare.
Ah well, happy presents at the end of the week, but I've got to get the others some prezzies too. Bring on the long, long shopping trips. >_<

Syke mentioned Furcadia, but that's a really weird site. Keeps on plugging itself when a 404 error message appears (which happens now maybe 4 times as much as before) or IE6 simply refuses anything else but Furcadia. Hopelessly weird and frus- and irritating so I've mailed their webmaster. See what s/he has to say about the neat little things that site is doing to my comp.

Fri, Nov. 28th, 2003, 01:22 am

Right on, 18 new members for our happy little club. At this rate we'll get some 40 this year. Good, very good. Heheh, torches in the dark, solemn words, and yay, you're in.
Now, fun weekend! Santa's always early here. :)

Mon, Nov. 17th, 2003, 12:28 am

SciFi-marathons are fun! A whole night of sci-fi leaves you tired yet satisfied. Star Wars IV, Star Trek I, Dune, Alien, Spaceballs, 2001 A Space Odyssee, oh yes. And of course, the fact half the time somebody's making comments on merely adds to the pleasure. :)
In other news, the Netherlands (let's all despise the name Holland) lost their soccer match to Scotland 1-0. Um, I couldn't care less, but since I live in the place... ;) Case of a team effort (Scotland) beating the big name players (the Dutch). And Wales held Russia to 0-0 in Russia. Hmmm, are we seeing the rise of Britain again? :D

Tue, Nov. 11th, 2003, 09:43 pm

Man, I'm back, and it's weird.
Everything's suddenly so normal! All those familiar things, places, people. The normal routine of going to university, shopping, cooking, cycling through my city. It's still sort of unreal.
It's good in a way, but I'll probably not start appreciating being back till this weekend or so, when I've met everybody again. Untile then it'll just feel... weird.
Still busy catching up with everything that's happened here, let alone on the net. They've even had two earthquakes here while I was gone! Earthquakes! Here! Ridiculous. They weren't much, truth to tell. 3 on the scale of Richter, and hardly any damage because we've got this nice absorbing ground. :) Caused by our exploitation of the gas pockets - scientists say 3.6 is going to be the max on the scale of Richter. Ergo, we'll live. ;)
For the rest everybody's just had life flowing past as usual, didn't miss anything except a few good bouts of drinking with the boards of newly installed fellow student associations. But I think this'll be compensated next week. :D
Thursday evening was neat. 'Mystic River' turned out to be a movie with neat twists, though coincidence was, in retrospect, maybe a bit too convenient. Found a good somewhat old-fashioned pub on Broadway and had a great time till it finally closed for the night. :)
Heh, think I'll phone a friend of mine tonight. He and a girl fell in love during our 3 week trip. Problem was, they both had people waiting for them at home. Ouch. Ah well, his relationship had gotten bumpy of late, but she'd already spent 6 years with him... Hope everything's gone as smooth as can reasonably be expected when they returned...
It was strange for the rest of us (24 of us in total), seeing them pair up halfway through the trip, knowing they both already had a relationship. Yet it was undeniably cute, sort of a soap series unfolding in front of your eyes. Loads of fun (friendly-like :)) was had at their expense. Eh, they make a neat couple. Just hope it'll be more than infatuation.
Oh, we did actually do serious stuff during the whole journey. ;) Chicago's real estate market now harbours no secrets from me, Detroit is in serious need of a lick of paint (literally, their old lead-based paint is causing all kinds of trouble), the US system of counties and municipalities funded by locally raised revenue is really hopeless, and NY is amazing. And a personal plea: drive smaller cars with less fuel consumption! Who in the world NEEDS an SUV for going into town?? Ah well, I'm not going on a personal crusade here (though sometimes the itch was there ;)), as far as I'm concerned I've spent time in a country with some of the friendliest people I've met, with friendly drivers too (a traffic jam was just a section of cars moving slowly, and you could clearly spot our cars - swerving from lane to lane and generally making it obvious WE were the foreigners, on account of being obnoxious drivers :D), and I had a great time.
Now, if I can somehow manage to finagle my way into finishing my study (if ever :P) on a project over there... :)

Thu, Nov. 6th, 2003, 03:59 pm

Gonna catch a movie with the rest of the gang here in NY. No, it's not going to be Matrix 3, we've heard bad things about it, plus some of us went yesterday and were disappointed. Too high expectations. :P
Whee, night on the town! (Hope we can find a place where the drinks are actually affordable :P)

Wed, Nov. 5th, 2003, 09:14 pm

Still in NY city. :)
It's great. Got a bit sick today though, headache, stomach in upheaval. Was it the food, the air, the tall builidings? Who knows, but I'm okay now anyway, so off to more adventures tomorrow. :)
The Marathon was pretty neat. Screaming people, runners in huge numbers and clothing. :D Fun.
Empire State building, WTC site, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, slowly working my way through the sights. :) Tomorrow we want to take a tour of the UN building. Now nobody ram any planes into it, right? ;)
Damn, going home on saturday already. Time just flies when you're having a good time. :P
Daryl out. :)

Mon, Oct. 27th, 2003, 11:52 pm

Fun day:
Riding around Grand Rapids, Holland, Zeeland, Vriesland and Drenthe - the 4 last places were all founded by Dutch settlers: funny seeing names pop up here. :)
And this evening I surprised myself by suddenly becoming a master at bowling. :D Scored 3 strikes in succession, followed by 3 spares before I returned to my usual scores. ;) Finished with a strike and a spare for 184 points. Yay! :D
Off to Detroit tomorrow. Should be different from what we've seen so far. It's seen bad times as far as we can gather. (People keep telling us not to go there :P) Going to be interesting.

Sun, Oct. 26th, 2003, 11:34 pm

Urbana-Champagne has fun bars, as does the small town of Angola (7-man band gets 20-man crowd wild ;)). Now in Grand Rapids, visiting antoher college. The match yesterday was exhilerating, though it was mostly one-way traffic: Michigan Wolverines trounced Purdue Boilermakers (what kind of name is that?!) 31-3.
The longer trips take us through the smaller villages, which is neat. Allows you to see a lot more. The trees are starting to get the most beautiful colours, halloween pumpkins are appearing everywhere and people are still friendly on the road (we're the dangerous drivers - as proven when we crossed in front of another car after dark - it was a Dodge Ram, colour: red - it was that close. :P). Also a lot of flags out. One'd never see that in the Netherlands.
Relaxing today, off to a busier schedule tomorrow again.

Travel

Well, I've made it. Been running around Chicago for 4 days now. Been to Schaumburg and am now in Urbana-Champagne. Logged in on a friend's account here at the university. :)
It's great! We've done lots, seen lots, and more to come.
The food is, um, 'different' (there's too much of it - and where's the fresh stuff??), but otherwise than that, it's been no problem at all. And people drive really friendly here on the roads. Big cheer for them all. :)
Off to a football match saturday (is that tomorrow?). Keep it coming! :D :D

Sun, Oct. 19th, 2003, 07:23 am

And off I go. :D

Tue, Oct. 14th, 2003, 12:16 am

Sunday I'm off to the USofA! Damn, that date is closing fast!
Still got to pack, think of things not to forget, finish my stuff here, defend my 'keatsen' championship on saturday, and generally panic before I finally sit in that plane.
Still, 24 others are currently doing the same, so let's bond in adversity, then party once we're there. :D
Oh, anybody a Wolverines fan? We're going to the Wolverines - Purdue match on the 25th of october and hope we've brought something blue to wear. ;)

Fri, Oct. 3rd, 2003, 07:56 pm

Whee! Parties rock, no kidding! I'm starting to feel relatively normal, awake and active again right now, yet the mood lingers. :)
Yay!
